Common eCommerce Mistakes and How To Avoid Them

Running a business can sometimes feel a little like climbing a mountain. The reason being is that sometimes you are right up at the top, with a clear view of what is going on, and at other times you can encounter problems and issues, and perhaps get a little lost along the way; not to mention the exhaustion and fatigue that can come from being a business owner. But just like someone climbing a mountain, you need the right tools, like a compass, map, and good walking shoes, to help you to reach the top. That is why it is so important to prepare yourself for business success by making sure that you are able to avoid common mistakes that many other ecommerce business owners will make. From things like choosing an ecommerce platform that isn’t good for users to not using good shipping methods, there are things to be avoided. Mistake One: Choosing the Wrong Ecommerce Platform

No matter if you are just starting out in this industry or have already been working in online retail, the ecommerce platform that you use can be the thing that can make or break your business. The platform that you choose to host your store will mean what the overall look is like, the user experience, and how it is all brought together. It can also play a part in how you are able to attract users to your business, and can be the things that allows you (or not) to scale your business.

Mistake Two: Not Maximizing the Potential of Your Site

Once you have your online platform, you need to make sure that you are using it to its full potential, so that it can be working for you. One of the best things that you can do is to do an SEO website audit to see what is or isn’t working for your site. This could include things like the keywords that people are using to find your site, as well as click-through rates and bounce rates; are people finding your site and staying, or are they coming through under the wrong terms, and therefore not finding that they want? And understanding of this can really boost your ecommerce business.

Mistake Three: Not Understanding Your Target Customer

Once you have your business plan and your products, plus your site ready to go, what else is there to think about? As good as all of that can be, you need to think about marketing and advertising your business, and that will be most effective when you know exactly who you need to be marketing the product to. You have to really understand your target market and what they needs and interests are, in order to really make your marketing work for them. When you can define and understand your target audience, it will help you create a user experience that will be just what they need, along with a brand message that will mean they will want to buy from you again and again.

  1. These are good tips, knowing things like this can probably make the difference of thriving or bottoming out. I see books in the library about this, they are huge, thick and intimidating, lots to know! Of course you can just do whatever, but it is risky to start a biz, need all the guidance you can get.

  2. I admit I don’t know a lot about platforms online, but it’s definitely true that if it’s hard to navigate a site, I probably won’t go back, so yeah, you’re right. Platform is important.
